The reality of disability in Libya in 2023: Numbers reveal the harsh truth

عربي

Libya has witnessed radical changes in recent years, and people with disabilities still face many challenges in their country, and knowing their numbers can contribute to a better understanding of this important segment of society.

Estimated numbers of people with disabilities in Libya

According to global estimates, the percentage of people with disabilities usually ranges from 10% to 15% of the total population. Based on this, considering Libya's population estimated at around 7 million, it can be estimated that there are between 700,000 to a million people suffering from various types of disabilities in the country.

Challenges they face

With this large number of people with disabilities, there are still challenges facing this segment of the population in Libya, including:

Lack of government support and specialized services: Despite efforts, healthcare, education, and social support services still suffer from shortages and lack of availability as needed.

Limited educational and employment opportunities: People with disabilities face difficulties in obtaining suitable job opportunities and education that meets their special needs.

Stigmatization and discrimination: Many of them suffer from discrimination and stigmatization in society, affecting their opportunities and daily lives.

Efforts to improve the situation

The Libyan government and non-governmental organizations are working to enhance support for people with disabilities. Current efforts include launching awareness campaigns, improving healthcare and educational services, and encouraging rehabilitation and training programs.

Despite the challenges, the estimated numbers reflect the large size of this segment in Libya. It is important to work on providing appropriate support and opportunities to enable people with disabilities to fully participate in society. Accurate data and official statistics can be useful in guiding efforts and policies towards improving their situation.

We hope that 2024 will witness a better realization of the rights and status of people with disabilities in Libya, where laws are better enforced and support and opportunities are enhanced, leading to tangible improvements in their quality of life and effective participation in society.
